Personally, I prefer giving presents, which might be the most generic answer but its true. Giving presents isnt what I actually like about it, but the outcome: the smile on that persons face makes it worth it.

I refused gifts a few times, usually money, since I consider it inappropriate.

Since i am rather a realistical person, yes, it is possible to build ,,the house of my dreams,,.

For me, the saying ,,There is no place like home,, describes not the home, but the people and the memories you have cherished there. It describes the emotional value of ones home; and just how much memories mean to us.
